The concept of a borderless world was developed in MBA programs in the ‘90s with the rapid advance of globalization and transnational trading blocs. Digitalization has given new meaning to the term, taking it beyond national borders and blurring the borders between the digital and the physical world. Digital transformation is creating seamless, automated interconnections between individuals, businesses, other organizations, and governments – in an era where physical location is less and less critical.

Just look ahead a few years, and it’s not unreasonable to imagine entirely digitally integrated societies. The process is still relatively new. But you don’t have to be a professional futurologist to see that more aspects of life are being joined in a “borderless” digital network.

Security in a borderless digital world

One cloud on this horizon, however, is data security. The rising wave of cyberattacks, data breaches, fake news, and ID fraud is already straining people’s trust in data and the online world. Our physical, social infrastructure, such as power networks, is also at risk of cyberattack, further undermining trust. And these issues will only multiply as borders blur between people, physical objects, and digital entities in the metaverse and digital twins.

Through this lens, cybersecurity plays a fundamental role in a digital society. Finding cybersecurity solutions to these and future threats, and helping create trust in everything, is a key part of Fujitsu’s mission.

The borderless world needs new trust technologies

Our approach recognizes that conventional, centralized operating modes in business and society are changing. These evolve into open, distributed network structures, such as new mobility services, an API economy in finance and retail, and distributed power networks.

We have developed self-sovereign and decentralized digital identity technology, multi-biometric authentication, and privacy protection. For example, our new Data e-TRUST Service and Enterprise Blockchain – Track and Trust create secure data exchange across industries. And our transparent Trust Transfer Technology prevents tampering with business data exchanged between private and public organizations, ensuring authenticity. In gaming, we have partnered with leading software companies to create a new digital signature solution for digital data rights management. This enables the secure distribution and sales of digital data in the metaverse and gaming worlds.

Decentralized Distributed Trust

We also work with customers to provide autonomous distributed trust technology that allows end-to-end traceability across connected ecosystems. Fujitsu Track and Trust blockchain technology brings a trusted validation point across production, supply, distribution, and sales networks. It creates a seal of authenticity with a transparent and tamper-proof way of tracing, tracking, and verifying an item’s credentials throughout its journey and lifespan. While blockchain is not a universal solution to security and trust challenges, the decentralization of authority at the heart of this technology will be crucial. It holds the promise of a new era where identity and data — and access to both — are enabled by self-sovereign technologies that restore control to people and rebuild trust in the digital world.

Frederik is the CTO for Fujitsu Belgium with the additional role of CDO. In these two positions, he drives growth and strategic renewal for customers by transforming traditional businesses into digital ones. He also manages the Enterprise Blockchain – Track and Trust Solution Center for Fujitsu Global. In this role, he works closely with customers to develop production-ready Blockchain and Distributed Ledger solutions while creating innovative methodologies to increase enterprise adoption.
Frederik also holds a complementary role of Head of Innovation for the Fujitsu Uvance Digital Shifts focus area. Fujitsu Uvance represents our commitment to building new possibilities by connecting people, technology, and ideas and creating a more sustainable world. As Head of Innovation, he helps our teams with converging technologies and horizon 3 innovations, mainly on business modeling, AI, Analytics, Blockchain, Software Architecture, and large Data Solutions.
