Fujitsu recently launched our very first Indigenous Internship Program. In partnership with Walanga Muru, the Indigenous unit at Macquarie University, we welcomed seven Indigenous undergraduate students as Fujitsu interns over the first weeks of September. Based in Sydney, the interns will complete the program on a part-time basis until mid-December in parallel with their University studies.
The Fujitsu Indigenous Internship Program is a meaningful step towards developing career pathways for Indigenous students in the ICT industry. Less than 1% of STEM university graduates are Indigenous, although they represent 3% of the Australian population. The launch of this program is a key commitment in our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, which is Fujitsu’s formal commitment to develop respect, relationships and opportunities with First Nations people in Australia.
The interns have been hired into various business units, including Cyber Security, Finance, Human Resources, Portfolio & Alliances, Project Delivery, Responsible Business and Sales. Alongside day-to-day responsibilities within their teams, the interns will also complete a structured development program, including Gallup strengths, building business awareness, and opportunities to connect with Fujitsu’s graduate alumni in the buddy program.
Fujitsu has also partnered with Indigitek, a networking and support group for Indigenous people in STEM, to provide the interns with the opportunity to connect with mentors outside of the organisation. Managers involved in the program will also undertake Cultural Awareness training with Macquarie University as part of their continual development.
Fujitsu is excited to welcome our indigenous interns on board. Not only will the program help young people develop their professional careers, it will also help Fujitsu introduce diverse thinking and experiences into our workforce.
