Quantum computing: Australia’s path to a technological revolution
Fujitsu / October 1, 2024
I am excited by the impending quantum revolution, which will position our nation at the forefront of a major technological transformation. Australia is not just participating in the quantum computing race; we are poised to lead it, unlocking substantial economic and employment opportunities for our future.
By 2030, Australia is expected to generate 8,700 high-tech jobs in the quantum sector, contributing to an industry worth $2.2 billion, potentially growing to $6 billion by 2045. These numbers signal a profound shift in how we approach technological development, job creation, and innovation. For consultants and clients, it means preparing for a future where quantum computing reshapes businesses and job roles.
Australia’s strength in quantum computing
Australia ranks 12th globally for public quantum investment and has 10% of the world’s quantum talent, an impressive feat for a country representing just 0.3% of the global population. Our universities are globally recognised, with six institutions offering advanced quantum research. This is only the beginning; by leveraging our strengths and fostering collaboration, Australia can transition from a participant to a leader in the quantum industry.
The pace of quantum innovation means the skills required for future jobs are not yet widely available, so as businesses, we need to invest ahead of the curve. The synergy between research, government, and industry will position Australia as a global quantum leader.
High-tech jobs and the future workforce
Growth in the quantum sector will create specialised jobs that demand both technical expertise and innovative thinking. Professionals will need a deep understanding of quantum theory and practical applications. The future workforce will require data scientists, software developers, cybersecurity experts, and strategists to build industry-specific quantum solutions.
At Fujitsu, we are committed to nurturing talent through collaboration with academic institutions, offering training programs, research opportunities, and internships to equip the next generation for a quantum-enabled economy. Industry and academia partnerships are key to ensuring Australia’s competitiveness in this rapidly evolving field. Our recently signed memorandum of understanding with the Australian National University exemplifies Fujitsu's commitment to quantum leadership and impactful industry and academia collaborations in Australia.
The next digital transformation
Quantum computing presents a unique opportunity to transform sectors like finance, healthcare, and logistics by reshaping business operations. As part of the next wave of digital transformation, quantum technologies will drive breakthrough innovation, enabling businesses to optimise processes and unlock new capabilities. Skilled services firms, like Fujitsu, will play a crucial role in guiding clients through quantum adoption, developing new business models, and aligning innovations with strategic goals.
Quantum computing has the potential to optimise everything from risk assessments and drug discoveries to supply chain management and manufacturing processes. Services consultants will be instrumental in helping businesses embrace quantum technologies, enhance data security, and leverage transformative innovations that drive operational growth.
Services firms can bridge the gap between quantum developers and end-users, offering strategic guidance on optimisation and security. This positions such firms as key players in helping businesses navigate the opportunities and challenges presented by quantum technology.
Fujitsu’s commitment to a quantum-ready workforce
Fujitsu is deeply invested in Australia’s quantum future. We have built the infrastructure, partnerships, and expertise to drive Australia forward, working closely with universities, government, and industry to create a robust quantum ecosystem. Quantum computing will impact every industry and aspect of society, from national security to economic growth.
Our role as business leaders is to ensure we are ready to harness this transformative potential. The next decade is pivotal for quantum in Australia. As we work towards creating 8,700 high-tech jobs by 2030, we must prepare the future workforce for the quantum economy and drive sustainable progress.
This journey is not just about technology; it’s about people, partnerships, and a shared vision for a prosperous future.
